Energy Savings Vs. Indoor Air Quality

"Current market trends include designing and constructing energy-efficient buildings, which often results in practices that can adversely affect the quality of the indoor environment. Energy-efficiency and IAQ are strongly interdependent. Proper implementation of energy-efficiency measures requires a thorough consideration of IAQ impacts. Similarly, IAQ measures must be implemented in a manner that is consistent with energy-efficiency goals. For example, there is often a perceived conflict between ventilating with an adequate quantity of outdoor air and the need to minimize energy costs."

Preventing IAQ Problems when implementing energy conservation measures is critical. Energy cost savings can be quickly offset by losses in worker productivity, building degradation, or litigation. Reviewing designed changes for the potential impact on IAQ and measuring indicators of ventilation and indoor pollutant levels can catch problems early.
